How Brake Calipers Function on Your Car

Brake calipers are designed to work under pressure. When drivers slow and stop their vehicle, they press the brake pedal. The pedal pressurizes hydraulic fluid or brake fluid down a series of lines. These brake lines are connected to the brake calipers which rest behind your wheels and over the brake rotors. The calipers press the brake pads into the surface of the rotor discs. The friction created is what slows and stops the motion of the wheels since the rotors are connected to them.

When Should You Replace Brake Calipers?

Brake calipers can take a turn for the worse between 40,000 and 80,000 miles depending on your vehicle type. Bad brake calipers will show signs of brake fluid leaks or give a grinding or screeching sensation when stopping. They can cause uneven brake wear and even score the surface of your rotors. If one piece of your brake system begins to fail, exchange the parts ASAP. Doing so early on can prolong the safety and reliable stopping performance you need for every commute.
